Joe, good luck with the N97. As you're a Nokia fan then your expectations will surely be met. Each to his own.

Those close-up pictures look amazing - could you also post some night-time dual-flash (non-edited) pictures as well please?
I'd be curious to see how it performs, particularly the distance at which it is able to effectively illuminate people / objects...

    Your daughter is a flower.
    N97 ? Who cares...

How old is your daughter Joe? The Nokia 97 looks nice but too bulky.
  • Joe Wilcox · 6 months ago
    Hi, Andre,

My daughter will be 15 this summer.

The phone is slimmer and longer than iPhone, and, of course, thicker. It's not a hefty phone, which helps. My initial reaction was, "Whoa, it's so big." After four days use I think, "Whoa, it's so small."

Great review. We are waiting expectantly for the N97 to be available in the UK.

The camera shots from the N97 look great, the close up on the snail pictures are excellent quality, but how good is the camera in low light- always an issue with the N96?
  • Joe Wilcox · 6 months ago
I haven't done any super low-light testing yet. The pic of my daughter was taken near dusk, and that looks pretty good. By the way, I snapped 11 pics of the snail, only one of which was unusable. From my experience using dSLRs, that's an unusually high percentage of keepers.

I loved the N96. Lots of reviewers didn't, but I found it to be an all-around great phone/camera/etc. I used the N85, which camera was faster and perceptually better than the N96. I do wish the N97 camera was as fast as the N85.

    Q. What's the mood there regarding N97 and iPhone 3GS? Nokia has limited carrier distribution over here. Few Americans know the brand beyond cheap or freebee phones, although Best Buy carries many E and N Series handsets unlocked (and so unsubsidized). There are no carriers carrying the N97. It's iPhone zaniness over here, particularly from journalists, many of whom use the Apple smartphone.

Really good review Joe. We're getting some really good feedback in the UK as well. I'm glad to see you like the PDair cases, I just wish they would make them a bit quicker. Did you know they were handmade? That is why it takes so long for them to become available!
  • Joe Wilcox · 6 months ago
    Hi, John,

I didn't know the PDair cases were handmade. Mine arrived yesterday, and it's a really nice fit.

You company sells handsets. How's the reception been to N97? Curious: Were you surprised to see the mobile go on sale in the US before the UK? I sure was.

    Hi Joe,
Yes from what we have seen and heard the N97 has been going down really well - interesting as it's in direct competition with the iPhone 3gs. Don't know who is going to win though!!

As for the US launch before the UK launch, we're unsure. It was may be a manufacturing issue as the phones are fundamentally different on the inside due to the US using cdma network, instead of GSM in Europe. If we remember back to the E71, the UK launch was months before the US launch!!

Have you noticed an increase in overall performance after flashing the device with the latest firmware?
